Founded in 1973, the University of Minho (UMinho) received its first students in the academic year of 1975/76 and it is nowadays one of the most important and prestigious Higher Education Institutions in Portugal. Located in the north of Portugal, the University has a campus in the city of Braga and another in the city of Guimarães, which cover a student population of around 19000, 40% of which are master or PhD students. The University has 1200 teaching and research staff and around 900 technical and administrative staff. An average of 500 research grant holders are involved in ongoing research projects at the University.Today the University is renowned for the competence and quality of its faculty and for the level of excellence in research as well as the wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses offered and the remarkable degree of interaction with other institutions and the society in general. For these reasons, UMinho is a central actor in the region, an important reference for the country and a recognised partner at European and global level.
The University's organisational structure is flexible and conducive to innovation and interdisciplinary, favouring the exploration of emerging research areas. The teaching and research units are the following: Institute of Arts and Humanities, Institute of Education, Institute of Social Sciences, School of Architecture, School of Economics and Management, School of Engineering, School of Health Sciences, School of Law, School of Nursing, School of Psychology and School of Sciences.
UMinho education and research projects have gained strong international recognition and are supported by a close interaction with many other research centres worldwide. The University is also focused on its environment, as it is involved in successful partnerships in the cultural and socio-economic fields. Currently, UMinho offers 53 undergraduate and Integrated Master’s degrees, 130 Master Courses and 45 Doctoral programs. More than 20 interinstitutional programs at master and doctoral level are being developed including programs with MIT, CMU and Harvard Universities and the collaboration with several universities in Europe, North America, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and East-Timor
The European Universities Association’s External Evaluation Committee considered in a recent evaluation that “The University of Minho is a reference point in high-quality teaching and learning, not only for Portuguese universities, but also in Europe and, indeed, the whole world.” Research is organized in the UMinho in 31 Research Centers; 80% of UMinho researchers are integrated in units ranked as Very Good or Excellent by international evaluation panels. UMinho research centres participate in State Associated Laboratories, in the fields of health sciences, nanomaterials, biomaterials and bioengineering. Namely, the 3B’s Research Group is a research unit from University of Minho that supports a multidisciplinary and highly skilled team which works at the interface of biotechnology, biology, biomedical engineering and materials science. The 3B´s main areas of research are: biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine & stem cells. It has been focused on natural and biodegradable biomaterials and in the regeneration of distinct tissues, such as bone, cartilage and skin. It is the leader of the European Institute of Excellence on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. It has strong links to spin-off companies and entrepreneurial activities, an academic clinical center and health care providers.
The European Universities Association’s External Evaluation Committee considered that “The University of Minho is at the level of international research universities, and belongs among the research universities in Portugal.”Valorisation of knowledge created within the University is a major concern of the Institution. 40 companies operating in the areas of communications and information technologies, biotechnology/environment and new materials developed after research conducted in the University. Internationalisation has been a strong commitment of the University with a quite intense range of activities, not only within the EU or with the Portuguese speaking countries, but also with several other countries on different continents.
